Scotch guard is a protective layer applied in a liquid form on upholstery or carpet that once dried forms a barrier between the surface of the fabric and anything that may spill and soak in or stain the fabric. With some offices in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, Nakuru, Kakamega and other parts of Kenya adopting this model. It calls for professional cleaning company tips on how one can handle this stain guarded furniture. One of the best inventions for the modern office is the scotch guard, or stain guard.

Many times new furniture will come with a layer of stain guard already applied to the fabric; it can also be applied by a professional cleaner after a deep cleaning.  It enables you to wipe away spills with ease when you get to them as soon as they happen, but not all stains happen in our presence when there are multiple people in the office. So, how do you treat stains that soak in on a stain guarded piece of furniture?

This is how to spot clean stains that soak in after stain guarding:

Step 1

If the stain is still relatively fresh and not dried, use plain white paper towels or clean white cloths/rags to blot and absorb as much of the stain out of the fabric as possible. Continue to apply plenty of pressure (remember to only blot not to rub) and soak  up the stain until it no longer transfers into the cloth/rag/towel.

Step 2

Try to locate the care instructions tag on the furniture, usually, it is located on the back seem of a cushion. Read the instructions carefully to determine what cleaning solution is best to use on the particular fabric your furniture is covered in. Some labels will clearly explain what care steps should be taken and others will have a sort of symbol code. Usually, the symbols are in the form of letters including “W’, “S”, “W-S”, and “X.” The W means that only water-based cleaners should be used, the S means that solvents should be used, the W-S means that both water-based cleaner and Solvents can be used and the X means that no liquids only vacuuming is recommended.

If your furniture requires a solvent cleaner you can try mineral spirits or rubbing alcohol for spot treatment. For furniture that requires water-based cleaner, you can use some hand dishwashing soap and water, the best way to do this is to mix ¼ teaspoon of dish soap into one cup of lukewarm water.

Step 3

Now that you know which cleaner is best for your furniture, it is time to get to work on that stain. Grab a clean dry cloth/rag/towel and dab a little solution onto it then gently blot that stain working from the outside toward the center. Continue to blot using new clean areas of the cloth until no more of the stain remains or is lifting from the upholstery.

Step 4

Once the stain has been removed rinse the area with plain water by dampening a cloth and blotting the area to remove any left-over solvent. When the area has been fully rinsed soak up as much extra moisture as possible with a clean dry towel.

For stains that will not come completely clean, fabrics  that carry an “x” on their care label, or furniture without a care label call in the help of a professional upholstery cleaner. They may be able to help you remove the stain.
